SENATOR FLETCHER: You were then with Lowe in his boat and went back to where the Titanic sank?
MR. BULEY: Yes, sir; and picked up the remaining live bodies.
SENATOR FLETCHER: How many did you get?
MR. BULEY: There were not very many there. We got four of them. All the others were dead.
SENATOR FLETCHER: Were there many dead?
MR. BULEY: Yes, sir; there were a good few dead, sir. Of course you could not discern them exactly on account of the wreckage; but we turned over several of them to see if they were alive. It looked as though none of them were drowned. They looked as though they were frozen. The life belts they had on were that much [indicating] out of the water, and their heads laid back, with their faces on the water, several of them. Their hands were coming up like that [indicating].
SENATOR FLETCHER: They were head and shoulders out of the water?
MR. BULEY: Yes, sir.
SENATOR FLETCHER: With the head thrown back?
MR. BULEY: Yes, sir.
SENATOR FLETCHER: And the face out of the water?
MR. BULEY: Yes, sir.
SENATOR FLETCHER: They were not, apparently, drowned?
MR. BULEY: It looked as though they were frozen altogether, sir. In the morning, after we picked up all that was alive, there was, a collapsible boat we saw with a lot of people, and she was swamped, and they were up to their knees in water. We set sail and went over to them, and in a brief time picked up another one.
SENATOR FLETCHER: Another boat?
MR. BULEY: Another boat filled with women and children, with no one to pull the oars, and we took her in tow. We went over to this one and saved all of them. There was one woman in that boat. After that we seen the Carpathia coming up, and we made sail and went over to her. I think we were about the seventh or eighth boat alongside. During the time I think there was two died that we had saved; two men.

LE SÉNATEUR FLETCHER : Vous étiez alors avec Lowe dans son canot et vous êtes retourné là où le Titanic a coulé?
M. BULEY : Oui, monsieur; et j’ai ramassé les corps vivants qui restaient.

Bien sûr, vous ne pouviez pas les discerner exactement à cause des débris; mais nous en avons retourné plusieurs d’entre eux pour voir s’ils étaient vivants. Il semblait qu’aucun d’entre eux ne s’était noyé. Ils semblaient gelés. Les ceintures de sauvetage qu’ils avaient étaient beaucoup [indiquant] hors de l’eau, et leurs têtes reposées, avec leurs visages hors de l’eau, pour plusieurs d’entre eux. Leurs mains se levaient comme cela [indiquant].
LE SÉNATEUR FLETCHER : Ils étaient hors de l’eau?
M. BULEY : Oui, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR FLETCHER : Avec la tête jetée en arrière?
M. BULEY : Oui, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR FLETCHER : Et le visage hors de l’eau?
M. BULEY : Oui, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR FLETCHER : Apparemment, ils n’ont pas été noyés?
M. BULEY : On aurait dit qu’ils étaient complètement gelés, monsieur. Le matin, après avoir récupéré tout ce qui était vivant, il y avait, un canot démontable que nous avons vu avec beaucoup de gens, et il était submergé, et ils étaient dans l’eau jusqu’aux genoux. Nous avons mis les voiles et sommes allés vers eux, et en peu de temps nous en avons récupéré un autre.
LE SÉNATEUR FLETCHER : Un autre canot?
MR. BULEY : Un autre canot rempli de femmes et d’enfants, sans personne pour ramer, et nous l’avons pris en remorque. Nous sommes allés là-bas et nous les avons tous sauvés. Il y avait une femme dans ce canot. Après cela, nous avons vu arriver le Carpathia, nous avons mis la voile et sommes allés vers lui. Je pense que nous étions environ le septième ou huitième canot à ses côtés. Pendant le temps je pense qu’il y avait deux morts que nous avions sauvés; deux hommes.
